Giorgio Armani

The centerpiece of Giorgio Armani´s style is the simple men´s jacket, which combines a sense of physical power and elegance to create a discreet and sophisticated sensuality.

Pared down, lengthened, and loosely fitted, Giorgio Armani´s jacket underwent a process of restructuring that produced a softer tailored look.

Giorgio Armani eliminated iron-on interfacing, and replaced the synthetic rigid cloth in fashion during the 70s with soft, luxurious fabrics.

A quest for comfort is a mainstay of Giorgio Armani´s approach; this has produces an austere style than can be worn by all ages.

Over the years, Giorgio Armani has altered the cut of his collections in tiny increments, always working toward his goal of achieving technical perfection.

After serving in the Italian army, Giorgio Armani entered medical school, which left in 1953. Giorgio Armani was then hired by La Rinascente, a chain of department stores in Milan . During this period, he later said, he acquired invaluable experience in mass distribution and began to develop his pragmatic approach to fashion.

Several years later, he was hired as a designer by Hitman, an Italian men´s jacket manufacturer owned by Nino Cerruti. Fully immersed in the fashion business, Giorgio Armani learned technique, silhouette, and composition, furthering his knowledge about the structure of clothes and tailoring techniques.

In the early 70s, Giorgio Armani left Cerruti and set up a freelance design company with Sergio Galeotti. In 1974, he introduced his own collection of menswear. The following year, he created the Giorgio Armani company and launched his first collection of womenswear.

His designs for women are reinterpretations of his menswear line; he adapts the same forms and a palette of neutral, interchangeable colors to the female body.

During the 80s, Giorgio Armani introduced the power suit, confirming a new cultural identity for the high-level working woman. This uniform, which conveyed an image of authority and respect, became a trademark outfit for an entire generation.
