If you intend to make your own soap then you are definitely going to need soap molds. There are several types of soap molds that are available today and these include the traditional simple molds, character molds, silicone molds, and wooden molds. The type of soap mold that is right for you depends on many factors like the soap making process you will using, the type of wax that you will use, and of course what are you design preferences.

In case you have not made soap before then it would be wise to stick with the basic soap molds. These are basically rectangular and made from silicone or wood. If you get the wooden soap molds then they will need wax paper lining, a plastic wrap, or something greased that will prevent the soap from sticking. Even some silicone molds also require a similar protection so check the product specifications carefully before buying them. There are some specially made silicone soap molds that allow for a quick release and they do not require any form of greased lining.

If you have some experience at handling soap then you could go for some of the fancier soap molds. There are the holiday and festival themed soap molds that are good. For example you can get molds that are specially targeted for events like Halloween, Easter, and Christmas. Of course, you may not wish to use them all the time and for the rest of the year you should try and get some of the contemporary or modern designed soap molds.

You always have the choice of not using molds at all and simply shaping the soap with your hands, like making soap balls for instance. It is always advisable to make sure that the soap blend is cool enough to handle before you attempt molding it with your hands. Simply scoop out as much as you can handle and then shape it as you wish.

If you are making bar soap then you may either spoon the soap into the mold or if the consistency allows it you may even pour it. Spooning is often less messy but it is really your choice. Once you are done molding or shaping the soap then do not forget to set the soap aside and allow it to cure. In case you wish to make whipped soap then first allow the soap blend to cool in the container it was made and then use a submergible blender. Turn it on to whip air into the soap blend. The increase in air will change the soap consistency and it will also lighten the color of the soap. After you are done whipping the soap you can then spoon or pour the mixture into the soap molds. Or allow it to cool enough to be handled and shape it by your hands.

Leave the soap in the mold for at least 12 hours before taking it out. The longer you leave the soap the cure the gentler and milder it will be. The curing allows the glycerin in the soap to mellow.
