Double eagle gold coin
There have been two major versions along with six minor deviations of the Double Eagle Gold Coin at the time of its production and minting in the USA. The Liberty Head or Coronet minted between 1849 and 1907 and the Saint Gaudens was minted between 1907 and 1933 are the two important versions.
Following are the 3 different minted versions of the Liberty version of this gold coin:-
1. The value of Liberty Head being “Twenty D” without motto, produced between 1849 and 1866. 2. The Liberty Head minted from 1866 till 1876 minted with a motto and repeated values as “Twenty D.” 3. From 1877 to 1907, the final version of the Liberty Head gold coin was minted and again had a motto with the new value showing as “Twenty Dollars”.Following are the 3 versions of Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin which began to be in 1907:-
1. Roman numerals were used in the 1907 version of the coin with a high relief and no motto. 2. Low relief and no motto were features of the 1907 to 1908 version of the Saint Gaudens coin. It had Arabic numerals instead of Roman ones. 3. A motto was introduced in the Saint Gaudens coin of the 1908 and 1933 versions, which again had a low relief and Arabic numerals as the 1907 and 1908.
It became illegal for people to own gold coins as for some reason in 1933, the then President of the United States of America, Franklin D Roosevelt decided to stop the coinage of gold. However collectors already had these coins and were actually able to retain them. Except once, no Double Eagle Gold Coins that were made in 1933 were ever legally released.
The US Government had theft of some of the coins that were actually minted at this time. Many have been recovered in the intervening years. Nevertheless, one of these 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coins was put up for sale at an auction in 2002. The coin was sold to a lucky person for $7,590,020 (US Dollars).
Earlier, $4,140,000 was the highest price ever paid for any old coinage and it was for an 1804 Silver Dollar. As the US government has deemed this high priced gold coin legal for any person to own, this particular Double Eagle Gold Coin has thus reached its vast auction sum. Unfortunately no on else is likely to ever g o for this kind of money because this one sold for such a vast sum. Also, as they have not been deemed legal by the US Government, they cannot be legally sold.
